The Watchman Lookout
The SMS has been invited to participate in the restoration and maintenance on one of Oregon's most prominent fire lookouts: The Watchman on Crater Lake Rim. The Watchman is our first partnership project with the National Park Service, and is the highest elevation lookout we have ever worked on (at a lofty 8,013 feet).
At right: Don Allen Sr. intently works to glaze a pane of replacement glass in 2010.
Given The Watchman's elevation, the field season for working there is quite short (typically limited from late July to late-August). For this reason, work has to be carefully planned. It's a LONG way to the hardware store from The Watchman!
At left: Dave Corrigan poses on the deck of The Watchman on a breezy, chilly afternoon in August. Wizard Island, which sits right below The Watchman, can be seen in the background.
The Watchman is one of Oregon's most visited lookouts. Work will continue there in the years to come.
